Since its inception in 1986, Emperor Specialty Foods Ltd has been a leader in importing and distributing premium gourmet products like fresh and dried mushrooms, truffles, and more. Originally focused on fresh shiitake mushrooms, Emperor Specialty Foods Ltd expanded to import mushrooms from China and local sources starting in 1995. By 1998, the company became the first in Canada to import fresh mushrooms from China by ocean shipment, which helped them expand their distribution network across Canada and into the U.S. In 2001, they opened an office in China, diversifying their product range to include imported fruits and vegetables. The company continues to produce organic fresh shiitake mushrooms at their Vancouver facility.
