San Francisco Structural Engineers has been an active participant in the designing and building initiative since the early 1980s. We have much experience and it ranges from the production of bridging papers that will have the performance standards, requirements of the design, and bridging drawings to working directly with general contractors from the start of design to the completion of construction. The conventional "design/bid/build" project delivery procedure limits the ability to exchange ideas with the contractor, hence design solutions are not always perfect. The design/build delivery paradigm unites designers and contractors, frequently working under the general contractor's supervision. This allows early, open communication between all parties. The result of this collaboration is a design that is compatible with the main structural systems as well as the overall construction sequence and timeline.
