Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are widely used in biomedical research and medicine to fight, diagnose and study diseases, and to develop and test new drugs. However, the production of mAb by the mouse ascites method (e.g., hybridomas) is greatly limited by the amount of pain and suffering involved and raises serious animal welfare concerns. Fortunately, an alternative to animal-based mAb has emerged in the form of recombinant antibodies (rAb).
