When you shine a powerful laser at plastic, the material releases its hold on electrons and starts to vibrate. Vescent Photonics is developing these lasers for ultrafast fiber lasers that can be adjusted using electric signals to generate pulses of light as short as 100 femtoseconds (100 quadrillionths or 10-15 seconds) each. These new lasers are sometimes called quasiparticle lasers because they operate within deep subpicosecond laser pulses that pulse on-off at up to one terahertz frequency.
